		<description><![CDATA[I spent a few months in Costa Rica once, very near Manuel Antonio National Park. Beautiful place. But it is not a country that cares much about food. The best thing on the menu is “gallo pinto,” rice and black beans. They eat a lot of stewed beef, indifferently cooked steak, and fried potatoes. It’s not a country that takes wine very seriously either.

    If you look into the history of Costa Rica, the reason is because the culture is shallow. There isn’t a long tradition of the same people in the same place. That’s also the reason the nature is so beautiful: The soils are harder to farm, so it was left alone, underpopulated. You get much better food in neighboring Nicaragua, but there’s a cost in converting beautiful forests to farmland.]]></description>
